justfortoday: dead zone!
it seems as though entries have been pretty sparse over on this board, and thusly, I'll take it upon myself to get things warmed up a bit.
How are you feeling about the fact that the movie has seemingly made far too many teenagers/young adults absolutely insane? It seems as though they've decided that they're die hard rent heads just because they paid nine dollars to see the movie once. It's actually driving me crazy. I feel like shouting, "Why don't you sleep on the street with the temperatures hovering below zero before waxing on an on about how much rent has changed your life!"
Or. I could be entirely wrong, and people actually like what sensationalism has caused.

I don't know.
I don't like it when people get obsessive about things. But.. it's hypocritical because I either obsess over or don't like things--there's no in between.
Right now, I'm not really into Rent. I bet part of it is that it's so popular now. Does that make sense?

yes, it absolutely makes sense. i'm feeling exactly the same way....it's become kind of mainstreamed, which is a bit tragic

This bothers me:
"Hey there's that guy from Law and Order!"
"Is that Idina?" *pointing to Ava*
"My favorite songs is 525,600 minutes"
or even better...
"Wait, this wasn't in the movie!"
my personal favorite, that I overheard a perhaps 10-year old boy saying to his sister,
"I know what a condem is!"

I don't really mind. Well, it get's on my nerves (a lot) but then again I remember the time when I was thirteen and first got into Rent. I can't claim I was much better/smarter. I'm glad more people got interested into the show, even if the reason is a rather crappy movie, or Idina or...
Then again I live far far away from where all the crazyness actually takes place and only have to endure it online (at least till april)

In ways I think you really cant be a true fan until you've experienced the stage show. like REALLY experienced it.
oh now the BEST moment at the Neder was when someone looked at the SOL doors and asked if the OBC was back in the show.
people walk into the show thinking they are going to see exactly what the movie brought to them. Matt is NOT Anthony and clearly whoever the Roger is isn't Adam and his long hair.
To experience it live isn't a privledge. its easy to do, and its shitloads better than what the movie became. its not the end all Rent thing.

To experience it live isn't a privilege. its easy to do, and its shitloads better than what the movie became. its not the end all Rent thing.
haha, that reminded me of "seasons of hype" a la Forbidden Broadway--
How sadly *clap* ironic *clap* that a story about friends... is.. never to be seen by "The Life" just the rich who like trends!

Well, for some people it's not easy to see the show on stage, cause they don't have the cash or live a few hundred miles away from any place it's actually playing :)
It bugs me when people say they love rent and haven't even heard the OBC recording, or read the original libretto or anything ("what is Halloween?" "A Fight? in GBL???") but consider themselves the biggest rentheads ever...
on the otehr hand there are 'rentheads' who'll tell you you're not a real fan since you haven't seen the OBC, or you've seen the show 'only' ten times, or you never rushed, or you've only seen non-eq shows...
I'm almost glad the only prod over here closes before they release the movie, I don't think I could deal with it...

I am a new rent fan. And honestly, I'd never even *heard* of it until the movie. I was never really big into theater because I've never had access to it (I used to live in a small town in Oregon, but now I'm in Vegas - where its a bit more easy to see it). I can only imagine how annoyed you guys must feel about all the teenies online saying things.

I have seen "Rent" 7 times in two days.I would have seen it more but we had to turn it in to Blockbuster. When I get enough money I plan on buying the movie so I can bug more people by talking about "Rent" all the time because I find talking about "Rent" amusing(for some reason it keeps me sane).I'm a 15 year old gurl and "Rent" has inspired me to go out there and live each day as if it were my last. "No day but today."And if sleeping on the street with temperatures hovering below zero is what it takes to show that I truly enjoyed this movie and that it meant something to me then I will gladly do it.

Well not all ppl are like the 9 dollar ticket obsession just because of its popularity, I'm a fan and yes the movie got me hooked but you must keep in mind that broadway isnt everywhere and some people just lack the knowledge of whats out there but I do too get annoyed at those posser Rentheads who dont even know johnathan larson is or what inspired him to write such a wonderful musical. And at the moment no I'm not freezing on the streets of NY starving for my art like a true bohemian but to tell you the truth that lifestyle would be one I'd be proud to live.

eh! what if broadway isnt available to all?!? so the movie opens up door to see new things...and so what if I'm a new fan doesn that mean I dont apreciate johnathan larsons amazing work as much? to you i ghess not...
